In January of 2020 I was contacted by the University of Windsor and asked to begin documenting the construction of a new sports facilty that was going to be built on the Windsor campus. I had previously shot a number of architectural photography projects in Windsor for the University but this would become the most extensive photography project yet. As a Windsor and Detroit based architectural photographer, my work primarily consists of the photography of completed projects. But I love the construction process and watching new buildings going up so I was not going to pass up the chance to photograph this amazing new building from start to finish!

I began doing monthly dron photography in February 2020. The University of Windsor Sports and Athletics facilities sit on a 30 acre site at the corner of College Avenue and Huron Church Road; just a short distance from the entrance to the Ambassador Bridge. Today the University of Windsor Athletic Facilities include the St. Dennis Centre, the Faculty of Human Kinetics, Alumni Field (home field of the Windsor Lancers football team) and the new Toldo Lancer Centre.

The Toldo Lancer Centre was designed by the Toronto architectural firm CS&P Architects in a joint venture with HCMA Architects. The Toldo Lancer Centre has a pool, basketball court with second floor running track and viewing area, fitness centre, spin room and large “Social Hub” for studying, meeting with friends or just relaxing after a hard workout.

The first few months of drone photography I was documenting the site work. I would typically shoot overall views from around the 30 acre perimeter and then move in for tighter views of the building site itself. Once the building began to take shape and walls were erected, I would begin shooting ground based photographs in addition to the drone shots. The photographs were shared amoung the University, architects and builders, allowing everyone involved to have a complete visual record of the construction progress from month to month.

In spite of all the delays and materials shortages caused by the global pandemic, the joint venture team of Ellis Don/Fortis Group was able to deliver CS&P Architects vision of a beautiful and highly functional Sports and Athletic centre to the University of Windsor in time for the start of the 2022 school year.
